This project will restore and conserve the environment for returnees in villages and primary schools in Kitgum and Lamwo districts in Uganda. Fifty households and four primary schools will be supported to establish and manage wood lots, orchards and vegetable gardens. The project will also empower the local community to set up sound environmental conservation practices, improved practices in modern farming, as well as identifying opportunities for income generation to improve their livelihoods.

Morungatuny camp, established in 1979, is one of the largest camps in Obalanga Sub County in North Eastern Uganda. Close to 20,000 people are living there in inhuman conditions. They have experienced famine, war, floods and some have had their children abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) during the rebel incursion into Amuria district in 2003. Their health has been compromised and preventable infectious diseases such as respiratory infections, gastro-intestinal infections, malnutrition, malaria and HIV/AIDS have accounted for chronic sicknesses, disabilities and deaths.

The goal of this project is to support the environmental rehabilitation process in and near IDP and refugee camp sites and in the return areas by undertaking environmentally friendly activities.
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is an International NGO with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. LWF has been working in northern Uganda since 1983. Currently, LWF works in five districts in northern Uganda implementing activities in various sectors including water and sanitation, education, food security, and the distribution of Non Food Items (NFIs). Targeted rights holders of LWF activities in the north are Internally Displace Persons (IDPs). LWF Uganda empowers individuals to achieve a better quality of life.

Rachele Comprehensive Secondary School (RCSS) is based in Lira District one of the towns in northern Uganda. RCSS is a fully registered formal secondary school that was established in February 2006 with a total of over 260 students most of whom are Formerly Abducted Children (FAC). Currently there are 366 students (253 boys and 113 girls) of whom 140 are former child soldiers.
